    Description

    This is an antique pocket watch form pedometer by Payne & Co., 163 Bond Street, London.  It is number 3996 and probably dates to c. 1865.  The white porcelain dial is 1 1/2 inches diameter.  It is in a machine turned gilt brass case marked AT and numbered 3996 as well.  The crystal has been replaced with an early celluloid one.
    Payne & Co. were active in Bond St. from 1825 into the early 20th century.  They were well known for their pedometers, which are usually found in silver or gold cases, which allows for easier dating by their serial numbers.
